The Literature of War, winner of the American Library Association’s 2013 RUSA award (Outstanding Reference Sources)

From the Editor’s Note:

The Literature of War, a three-volume reference guide, provides critical introductions to works in which military conflict is an important influence or setting. Most of the 300 entries discuss a single work of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama. These texts, originally written in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and other languages, portray wars spanning from ancient times to the twenty-first century. Among the earliest works discussed in the guide is The Trojan Women, produced by Greek playwright Euripides in 1400-1200 BCE, which details violence inflicted by Greeks on the Trojan royal family. Later books include Dien Cai Dau (1988), a collection of poems concerned with the Vietnam War by American author Yusef Komunyakaa; The Stone Virgins (2002), by Zimbabwean writer Yvonne Vera, set in the 1980s during an era of civil distrust, paranoia, and violence in Zimbabwe; and War Trash (2004), a fictional memoir of a prisoner of war in Korea by Chinese writer Ha Jin.
